3 Must-Dos Before You Hit a Chip Shot

It’s simple.  The better we chip, the lower our score. We can use a variety of techniques to hit great chips, but we must do these three things regardless of technique:

  1. Walk onto the Green and Pick a Landing Area. This does three things. One, we get a better visual of the terrain that our golf ball will be traveling.  Two, we are using our feet to feel if the landing area is firm or soft, wet or dry.  And three, we are visualizing how far the ball is going to roll in relationship to the landing area and the hole.  Is the ball going to fly 50% of the distance in the air and roll 50%? Or is it going to fly one-third and roll two-thirds?  There is no right or wrong, however, this decision helps in shot and club selection.  Ideally, this landing area is the size of a hula hoop or baby swimming pool.  If your landing area doesn’t give you this much space, you might need to choose a more forgiving landing area.
  2. Determine the Distance from Your Landing Area to Your Golf Ball. This can be simple and at the same time complicated if you let it.  You must determine how your stride compares to 1 yard.  For some, a yard is equal to the biggest step you could ever take.  For others, a yard is a normal stride.  And still for some, we are better off using our range finders to get the most accurate number.  How are you supposed to hit a golf shot if you don’t know how far you are trying to hit it?
  3. Learn How to Read the Lie. The grass/lie will tell you what kind of shot to hit.  Is the grass laying against you? Are you with the grain? Is the ball sitting up? Is it in a hole?  Is the grass long or short?  Is the lie uneven or on a slope? Does the green sit above you or below you? All of this information will tell us what kind of shot is required of us and what club we should use.
