Everything in Perfect Timing...

I have played cast irons my entire life...until two weeks ago.  I jumped ship and transitioned to forged. I was ready for a change, a new challenge. As a golf professional, I understood that I would lose a smidge of forgiveness so I will have to be on my game. Although, I always hit it in the center of the face anyways. That's why they call me the Queen of the Par 3s.  Also, the last shaft I had was getting a little too balloony from my Wonder Woman power, so I beefed it up which is pushing me to train harder. I LOVE THEM.

One thing I didn't really consider in my decision to switch is that my sequencing during my swing has to be flawless with my new weapons. Sequencing is the order of events in your golf swing.  It's like toasting bread. If you put the peanut butter on the bread first and and then put the bread in the toaster second, you will have an awful mess.  The same is true with your golf swing.  If you start your downswing before you finish your backswing, you'll struggle. If the pffst at the bottom happens after the ball instead of at the ball, we call that a whiff.

The other request my new clubs are making is that once I start my downswing and my sequencing is good, I must go and I must go fast...I am speed. My new tools do not allow for hesitation of any kind. This will be interesting when I am competing.  In the past, I have struggled with self-doubt and lack of belief in myself and my new bag will not tolerate small-mindedness. My game is pushing me to grow with it.

So how am I answering the call of my new irons?  I practice my sequencing in a mirror in slow motion.  My brain will create new pathways or reinforce desired pathways in slow motion, and I can gradually get faster.  I also practice drills on the range that isolate certain areas of my sequence and I integrate these drills into my "normal" routine by hitting a few balls with the drill and a few balls without the drill. In terms of speed, I am continuing my strength and speed workouts several times per week. And it is working. My swing speed with my driver has increased 8 mph since November. Hoping for another 5-10 mph before the season really gets going.

New clubs are fun.  The right clubs are funner.

Everything in perfect timing...

Many Birdies,

Melissa
