Yoga for Life and Golf and Everything in Between
Yoga was originally a verb. It was something you do to engage, get involved, to participate, to connect. Just like golf, it is a process. It's the way you engage with the world and create relationships. Yoga does have a physical practice associated with it, however, breathing, meditating, eating, fasting or basically any human function can be attained with the help of yoga.
Yoga may sound intimidating for those who have never practiced. Golf may very well carry the same rap for the uninitiated. So why join the two?
On a physical level, yoga can help us improve balance, increase flexibility and range of motion, reduce stress, and enhance our ability to focus. Those are all good things for golf. Those are also good things for life. Yoga and her sister practices are helping me run a business, have a family and play golf competitively, all while maintaining a small level of sanity (I think?!).
My vision for combining yoga and golf are bigger than sanity maintenance. On the lesson tee, I have the ability to see deeper than just the surface level of the golf motion. It's my wonder woman superpower. I can detect injury, emotional discomfort, relationship issues and a host of other things that I sometimes wish I couldn't see or know. I could probably spend 2-3 hours with some students as we navigate the mental, physical and emotional planes all in search of the perfect swing plane. However, most students aren't ready for this unearthing.
Offering movement classes along with golf instruction has been a dream and I've enlisted the help of my dear friend Karen. She is a certified Yoga Instructor among MANY other things. We've created two Mindful Movement classes at Golf Ranch to help golfers of all ages and abilities achieve their golf and life goals. NO YOGA EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. Each week we learn how to listen to our bodies and move more efficiently. No judgement, just compassion, empathy and fun...and Karen's constant reminders to breathe.
Just like golf, yoga and movement is a practice...which means you have to do it more than once...like maybe try a little every day. I hope to see you on the mat.
Many Birdies,
Melissa
