2nd Annual Tri County Junior Open

Image
2nd Annual Tri County Junior Open Junior golf… why is it important? The PGA of America’s number one reason is to develop life-long benefits. What does that entail? It gives them a chance to see what makes this game great, from etiquette to how much fun one could have. It’s also chance to get out and find other kids who share an interest in this sport. Golf, as we all know, is social as much as it is competitive. Some have said, though, it can be difficult to find something for their child to get involved in. That’s why the Tri-County Junior Open exists. It’s a chance for the kids, of ages 10-17, to experience what a tournament style atmosphere is like, but reminding them to still have fun and take it all in. The number one priority, as we’ve mentioned, is to get out and play. We want the kids to come out, enjoy this great game, compete, and see what it’s like to start taking golf seriously. How does this open stand out from others? A huge aspect of this is having a USGA ru...

Why Golf?

Image
Since I returned from the Northwest Women's Open in June, I have been asking a lot of golfers why they play the game. I do get my fair share of "I don't know" but every now and then I do get a meaningful response from the souls who are willing to slow down and consider the question. But then yesterday, the question was asked back to me and it has taken me 12 hours to generate a few ideas as to why I chose and continue to choose golf. However, one thought continues to stand out; golf has been my ROCK . It is my CONSTANT . Golf being constant is ironic to me as the game itself is ever-changing. So how could it provide stability for me?  I was handed a golf club when I was five.  Or was I really handed a FUTURE or an ornate gift ? Or was it Pandora's Box ? Golf has outlived my childhood, teenage years, boyfriends, and jobs. It has survived college, pregnancies, herniated discs, and lost loved ones. It has traveled the world with me and continues to stay by my side...

Know Your Worth, Pumpkin!

Image
I have pumpkins showing up everywhere in my world.  The first started growing behind the golf shop in the weeds where I dump spent pumpkins every November.  Then I noticed one growing next to my driveway at home. Strange place, but I've learned that strange things happen in my world. And then yesterday, I noticed one growing at the end of the driving range. I really have no idea how that one got there.  However, when an animal or autumnal fruit or aberration shows up, I tend to research the meaning of this sign in my life. Why is this symbol or sign showing up for me right now? The first internet search of pumpkins shared the following: "Pumpkin is one of the more resilient fruits, finding ways to grow large and bulging amongst sparse soil and sharing nutrients along a connected vine that reaches into the ground to replenish itself. Perhaps for this reason pumpkins have become symbols of prosperity, growth, and abundance." It seems that the pumpkin perfectly describes my ...

In Case You Need A Resolution for the New Year...

Image
I don't use New Year's Resolutions anymore.  Not that they are bad, they just are no longer a catalyst for change in my life. Last year, I quit sugar in October.  The week before Halloween.  And it was very difficult but I am still sugar-free over a year later. And the idea of an auto-immune disorder looming over my head was enough initiative to kick the habit. I most recently liked the idea of picking one word that would inspire me for the year.  However, words are like colors for me; I like a lot of different colors and it almost changes on a daily basis. I believe there can be something deeper inside of us that can initiate change besides the flipping of a calendar. However, that is not my reason for writing. I want to offer up help for those that might want ideas of how to be better in golf, and maybe just health or life, and lend a hand if needed. So how can Golf Ranch help you resolve to be a better version of yourself? Maybe try one or four of the follow...

PARfection Brings Expectation to the Dance

Image
I've always been a perfectionist and have never really shied away from it.  However, I was reading something recently and the author mentioned that with perfection comes expectation and I had never really thought of it that way, until a few weeks ago when my body, mind, and spirit completely tanked. Physically disguised as dehydration, my issues were more than a lack of fluids. In striving for perfection, the expectations I set for myself and my business sent me to rock bottom. And down there, it was cloudy and surrounded by uncertainty and almost unbearable for someone who thought she had clarity.  Side note: I am a  hardcore Pisces, always two fish swimming in opposite directions.  During the time I was down, I had very little focus and my head spun evaluating every business and personal decision I had made in the last 8 years. Do I want to continue to play golf competitively? Do I really want to teach golf? Do I want to cut grass? Do I still want to be a partner ...

Golf Sick?

Image
During a rain delay today, Larry was watching a You Tube video interviewing Dr. Morse, a guy that has unlocked the key to total health and long-term  wellness. Of course it does involve clean meats, fruits and veggies, however he did start the conversation by saying you must BELIEVE that you can be healthy. And then he explains we have had so many generations of poor eating habits that it is possible to detox and reverse the bad, however, it might take awhile. So as I drive home from 3 days of disappointing tournament golf, mourning all of the shots left out there, the trophies going home with someone else, cuts missed, I start to question my belief in myself and my game. This has been a part of my grieving process as of late. Within 48 hours, Larry and I will go through my rounds of golf and we’ll come up with a plan and we’ll start working on my game again. I will start feeling better again. The pain of the disappointment hurts so bad, so deep in my heart. EVERY. SINGLE. ...

Golf Like You Love Yourself*

Image
*Before I get too far, I have to give credit to my dear friend Chara for writing a book called Eat Like You Love Yourself and creating a podcast called Live Like You Love Yourself . This post was inspired by her. Are golfers not their own worst critics?   And then try to give a golf lesson to someone who is already defeated internally before the lesson even begins.  I've had several students (more than I can count) agree that golf is 99% mental or emotional and then continue to ask for physical corrections.  If you believe in self-fulfilling prophecies, golf will give you plenty of examples.  And then we go back to searching for more distance, more accuracy and of course, my least favorite word, more consistency. The work that needs to be done here is an inside job and it is some of the most difficult, yet rewarding work we can do. Our good friend Tim Kremer's Thought of the Day this morning read, "Improvement is not as much about movement forward as letti...
