In Case You Need A Resolution for the New Year...

Image
I don't use New Year's Resolutions anymore.  Not that they are bad, they just are no longer a catalyst for change in my life. Last year, I quit sugar in October.  The week before Halloween.  And it was very difficult but I am still sugar-free over a year later. And the idea of an auto-immune disorder looming over my head was enough initiative to kick the habit. I most recently liked the idea of picking one word that would inspire me for the year.  However, words are like colors for me; I like a lot of different colors and it almost changes on a daily basis. I believe there can be something deeper inside of us that can initiate change besides the flipping of a calendar. However, that is not my reason for writing. I want to offer up help for those that might want ideas of how to be better in golf, and maybe just health or life, and lend a hand if needed. So how can Golf Ranch help you resolve to be a better version of yourself? Maybe try one or four of the follow...

PARfection Brings Expectation to the Dance

Image
I've always been a perfectionist and have never really shied away from it.  However, I was reading something recently and the author mentioned that with perfection comes expectation and I had never really thought of it that way, until a few weeks ago when my body, mind, and spirit completely tanked. Physically disguised as dehydration, my issues were more than a lack of fluids. In striving for perfection, the expectations I set for myself and my business sent me to rock bottom. And down there, it was cloudy and surrounded by uncertainty and almost unbearable for someone who thought she had clarity.  Side note: I am a  hardcore Pisces, always two fish swimming in opposite directions.  During the time I was down, I had very little focus and my head spun evaluating every business and personal decision I had made in the last 8 years. Do I want to continue to play golf competitively? Do I really want to teach golf? Do I want to cut grass? Do I still want to be a partner ...

Golf Sick?

Image
During a rain delay today, Larry was watching a You Tube video interviewing Dr. Morse, a guy that has unlocked the key to total health and long-term  wellness. Of course it does involve clean meats, fruits and veggies, however he did start the conversation by saying you must BELIEVE that you can be healthy. And then he explains we have had so many generations of poor eating habits that it is possible to detox and reverse the bad, however, it might take awhile. So as I drive home from 3 days of disappointing tournament golf, mourning all of the shots left out there, the trophies going home with someone else, cuts missed, I start to question my belief in myself and my game. This has been a part of my grieving process as of late. Within 48 hours, Larry and I will go through my rounds of golf and we’ll come up with a plan and we’ll start working on my game again. I will start feeling better again. The pain of the disappointment hurts so bad, so deep in my heart. EVERY. SINGLE. ...

Golf Like You Love Yourself*

Image
*Before I get too far, I have to give credit to my dear friend Chara for writing a book called Eat Like You Love Yourself and creating a podcast called Live Like You Love Yourself . This post was inspired by her. Are golfers not their own worst critics?   And then try to give a golf lesson to someone who is already defeated internally before the lesson even begins.  I've had several students (more than I can count) agree that golf is 99% mental or emotional and then continue to ask for physical corrections.  If you believe in self-fulfilling prophecies, golf will give you plenty of examples.  And then we go back to searching for more distance, more accuracy and of course, my least favorite word, more consistency. The work that needs to be done here is an inside job and it is some of the most difficult, yet rewarding work we can do. Our good friend Tim Kremer's Thought of the Day this morning read, "Improvement is not as much about movement forward as letti...

The Black Hole of Golf Technology

Image
I almost got lost in the BLACK HOLE of driving range practices. I was playing with new technology on the range and I almost got sucked in...and it took all of my willpower to get me out. During my practice last week, I decided to try the Trackman Combine on our new T4. The Combine is an evaluation of the golfer’s ability to hit 60 shots at various yardages. The golfer hits 3 shots at 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 160, and  180 yards and then hits 3 drivers. This process is then repeated one time. In usual Trackman fashion, the evaluation tracks club speed, ball speed, angle of attack, spin rate, carry yardage, total yardage, side movement, and distance from pin. You can also view a dispersion report, trajectory report, more club data and probably other reports that I have yet to uncover (that’s how Trackman rolls). While hitting all 60 shots, Trackman give you a  score and eventually assigns you a handicap. Without going into all of my details, I felt pretty good about my 60,...

Yoga for Life and Golf and Everything in Between

Image
Yoga was originally a verb. It was something you do to engage, get involved, to participate, to connect. Just like golf, it is a process . It's the way you engage with the world and create relationships. Yoga does have a physical practice associated with it, however, breathing, meditating, eating, fasting or basically any human function can be attained with the help of yoga. Yoga may sound intimidating for those who have never practiced. Golf may very well carry the same rap for the uninitiated. So why join the two? On a physical level, yoga can help us improve balance, increase flexibility and range of motion, reduce stress, and enhance our ability to focus. Those are all good things for golf. Those are also good things for life. Yoga and her sister practices are helping me run a business, have a family and play golf competitively, all while maintaining a small level of sanity (I think?!). My vision for combining yoga and golf are bigger than sanity maintenance.   On the less...

In Between Birdie and Bogey

Image
I recently played in a US Women's Open Qualifier in North Carolina.  It is a one-day, 36-hole event that takes you directly to the US Women's Open if you finish in the top three. For me, there were a lot of wins this year even though I didn't shoot low enough to qualify. If you look at my scores, it may seem like my game is more than a bit off from qualifying, but I was just a couple mental mistakes away from playing well. Our good friend, Tim Kremer, founder of Spirit of Golf and Peak Performance Mind Coaching, said to me, "Isn't that the truth? There is a fine line between being under par and over par." And I believe there certainly is. Lately, a lot of things feel "in between" for me.  My golf game has improved so much over the last 8 years, that is feels like a whole new game, yet the scores don't always reflect. In between good and great . Our business is growing exponentially, yet we are still operating as a small business with big busine...
